History of Stafford Castle

  1. c.1100 Normans build a huge timber fortress (Robert de Toeni)
  2. 1347 Ralph, 1st Earl of Stafford, orders a stone keep on the motte
  3. 1348 Licence to crenellate granted
  4. 1444 Humphrey Stafford made Duke of Buckingham; castle's heyday
  5. 1537 Inventory records herbs, basis of today's herb garden
  6. 1813 Keep rebuilt in Gothic Revival style by the Jerningham family
  7. c.1950 Abandoned in the 1950s and becomes derelict
